Even if you’ve been to Krabi many times over the years, there is still always more for you to discover! Have you ever spent a day with the elephants? If not, then you haven’t experienced all that Krabi has to offer! From feeding these elephants to bathing them, you’ll encounter all sorts of activities when you play with them.
If you want to visit the elephants of Krabi, then make time to visit the Krabi Elephant Sanctuary. Here’s what you can expect during your visit:
Opening Hours and Price
If you want to visit the Krabi Elephant Sanctuary, do note that they offer two tours. The first tour usually starts at 7:00 a.m. and concludes at noon. Meanwhile, the second tour begins at 1:00 p.m. and ends around 6:00 p.m.
If you are more of a morning person, then we will suggest that you do go for the morning tour because the weather is also much cooler during this time. However, if you love to lie in bed for most of the morning, then you’ll still get a chance to meet the elephants in the afternoon.
As for the price, adults will have to pay 2,500 THB for a session. If you bring a child, that’ll cost you another 2,000 THB, each. However, if they’re younger than four years old, they will not be charged an entry fee.
Learning about the Elephants
When you first arrive at the Krabi Elephant Sanctuary, you will be greeted by the staff there. As you tour among the elephants, you’ll soon come to learn about the unfortunate stories of Thailand’s working elephants.
If you’ve ever wanted to ride an elephant, you might be a little disappointed because they’ll tell you about why riding elephants are cruel. Not only does it hurt the elephant, but you put yourself at risk if anything should go wrong as well.
Feeding the Pachyderms
After learning all about the elephants and the sanctuary, you’ll be handed with various types of food to feed them, such as bananas, cucumbers, and other edible produce. If you think that the food is for you, think again. They’re for the elephants, and you’re going to feed them! Watch as they slowly turn at you, swinging their trunks around and swiping the banana straight of your hand to munch it down.
Walking with the Gentle Giants
After the feeding session, you’ll take a walk with them towards their bathing area, which is actually a mud pit. It is also recommended that you bring a change of clothes because while you marvel at these creatures while washing themselves, they might just spray you full of water and mud.
If you’re already wet, you can actually dip right in with the elephants, bathing along with them and scrubbing their rough skin clean. This will perhaps be the biggest highlight of your visit to the sanctuary, and one that’ll bring you closest to the elephants.
Wrapping up
Your trip to Krabi wouldn’t be complete without spending time with the elephants because they are an integral part of Thai culture, playing a huge role in history, such as during wars. Today, they’re kept safe by the sanctuary so that they can roam freely. When you book a session to visit the sanctuary, not only will you get to experience something new, but that you’re supporting the efforts of the sanctuary as well.
